Frank L. Ward Water Treatment Plant Expansion And Upgrade
City Of High Point, North Carolina

Davis-Martin-Powell & Associates provided complete planning, design, and construction services for the expansion of the Ward Water Treatment Plant. This $10.7 million project increased treatment capacity from 16 MGD to 32 MGD and was completed in 1999. The facility treats water from Oak Hollow and City Lake and provides finished water to citizens of High Point, Archdale, Jamestown and surrounding areas.

The expanded water treatment facilities include:

  • Aerated rapid mix basins
  • 32 MGD Superpulsator® upflow clarifier
  • 8 high rate, dual media filters with air scour
  • 32 MGD transfer pumping capacity
  • A 10.0 MG prestress concrete clearwell
  • Two 16 MGD, 900 HP variable speed high service pumps
  • Two 8 MGD fixed speed high service pumps
  • Chemical feed systems (alum, caustic, powdered corrosion inhibitor, and fluoride)
  • Hypochlorite feed and storage facilities
  • Powdered activated carbon silo and feed system

Hypochlorite is used as the primary disinfectant and ammonia is available to reduce disinfection byproduct formations.

The design also includes a PLC based distributed control system (SCADA) to allow central operation and monitoring of the plant processes and equipment.

Other improvements included a 6,000 square foot maintenance facility, office renovations, and additional laboratory facilities.
